Abstract

The aim of the present study was to compare the effect on dental plaque accumulation and gingivitis of two different volumes (10 and 15 ml) of a mouthrinse containing 0.12% Chlorhexidine with 10% Xylitol.

Methods

This clinical short term investigation was a single blind, randomized, study involving 29 healthy volunteers (14 female, 15 male; mean age 19.7 years) with gingivitis and undergoing orthodontic treatment. Subjects were randomized into two groups: 10 ml rinse or 15 ml rinse. All patients rinsed with a Chlorhexidine 0.12% + Xylitol 10 % preparation for 30 seconds, twice daily. Subjects didn’t receive oral hygiene instruction or dental prophylaxis. On baseline examination and at day 30 the following parameters were evaluated: Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI), Papilla Bleeding Index (PBI) and Stain severity Index (SSI). At day 15 SSI was reevaluated.

Results

Baseline condition showed no difference between groups. After rinsing for 30 days PI, GI and PBI were reduced significantly and the SSI increased significantly. At day 30 comparison between groups showed no significant difference for any parameter evaluated (p>0.05).

Conclusion

The clinical antiplaque and antigingivitis effect of a mouthrinse containing Chlorhexidine 0.12% and Xylitol 10 % was not different when the volume used was 10 or 15 ml.

Key words: Chlorhexidine, Xylitol, antiseptics, gingivitis, biofilm, mouthrinses.
